Mission
THIS IS A HAND UP, NOT A HANDOUT.
Stand By the Wounded assists in meeting the long term needs of critically wounded military personnel, veterans, and first responders at the Federal, State and Local level by addressing gaps in the rehabilitation process. We provide patients access to elite rehabilitation facilities and world-class performance trainers with a proven record of success, offering the chance to return to duty and a life of normalcy and purpose.
This isn't easy; it requires dedication, hard work, and a commitment to recovery. In short, it is not for everyone. We work with the patient's primary care providers and a team of specialists at The Comeback Initiative to identify and screen candidates who can benefit from the program and have a willingness to move forward beyond their injuries.
Vision
During the 2.5 years that SBW's founder, Mark Gellert, spent bed-ridden and recovering from combat wounds in numerous facilities, he started to think about how best to bridge the gaps between the care and attention that maximizes the odds of successful rehabilitation and a return to normalcy.
He identified what he believed to be the most critical elements to his own rehabilitation beyond the direct and immediate medical care he received: The ability to take an active role in organizing his care and rehabilitation schedule, and access to world-class rehabilitation facilities-receiving the same care and attention that professional athletes have available to them. This allowed him to return to duty with an integrated performance plan and little evidence of his injuries. Working with elite performance coaches and trainers provided him with a renewed sense of purpose and the ability to focus on his success rather than his injuries resulting in a full recovery.
Nominations
We provide funding for travel, lodging and meals while patients receive treatment at any of the world-class facilities The Comeback Initiative has located around the country. All a patient needs is a positive attitude and the inability to quit!
If you know someone who has been wounded or injured in the line of duty, we'd like to know. Contact us with nominations at: [email protected] A patient liaison will be in touch to initiate the screening process. |
